Agile Cincinnati Pays Tribute to Jim Weirich

On Tuesday, February 25 at the Hofbrauhaus in Newport, KY, Agile Cincinnati will celebrate the life and legacy of Jim Weirich (1956-2014) who passed away last week.  For those who did not know Jim, he was a thought leader on many fronts, both in the Agile and Ruby communities, who spoke, wrote, and coded prolifically.  If you've used Rake for Ruby, you can thank Jim. For those of us who did know him, we will miss a man who was never a stranger, larger than life in his accomplishments, but humble in his nature. Rest in peace Jim!

This is a special event, not our normal monthly meeting.  If you plan to attend, please register through eventbrite so we have an idea of how many will attend.  This event is not sponsored and attendees are responsible for their own food and beverages.

February Meeting: 5 Lessons from the World’s Largest Enterprise-wide Agile Transformation

Many lessons were learned along the way during the largest all-in enterprise-wide agile transformation.  Aaron Kopel, who led a group of more than 40 agile coaches that guided the Agile transformation effort at all levels of the organization for nearly 2 years, will relay his experiences and some key learnings that emerged from his time as an external Agile Coach advising the company on its Agile journey.  If your company is considering an agile transformation, or are already in the thick of it, this is a must attend opportunity!

Aaron Kopel is the Founder of Project Brilliant LLC, which is focused on advising companies through their Agile Transformation journey toward Business Agility. He discovered Agile by accident many years ago after founding his first tech startup company in the early 2000’s and has been involved in Agile initiatives ever since.  Over the last 2 years he led a group of more than 40 experienced agile coaches who guided the worlds largest enterprise-wide Agile transformation. Mr. Kopel has worked with countless companies, ranging from 2 person tech startups to Fortune 100s, across the country to challenge them to understand and apply agile practices across their entire organizations.   Having coached individuals, teams, leaders, and executives on their agile journeys has afforded him deep insight into how a company’s vision, values, and culture can align to enable true Agility.

January Meeting: Creating an Agile Culture

Eliassen Group is sponsoring the travel for Damon this month. Please give him a warm welcome and thank the Eliassen Group representatives at the meeting for sponsoring his trip.

Culture is the shared beliefs and behaviors of an organization. There is organization-wide culture and culture specific to functional areas including business, architecture, PMO, developers, QA, infrastructure, and management. In addition, all of this is set against the backdrop of 40+ years of software development and IT industry culture. Agile brings a new set of beliefs and behaviors which may either reinforce the organization's existing culture, or create an opportunity to consider new possibilities. Agile also brings with it new practices, techniques, and software tools that support a shift in culture and can help to ease any potential conflict.

This session will examine the kinds of cultural and behavioral changes that Agile can bring, the benefits of those changes, and how to move towards a more Agile supportive culture. Specifically, we'll look at the role of culture in the following areas: raising impediments; long standing cross-functional teams; self-organization; frequent business and development interaction; breaking down silos; and managing, measuring, and compensating people.

Damon Poole’s 23 years of software experience spans from small co-located teams all the way up global development organizations with hundreds of teams. Damon is a past President and Vice President of Agile New England. He writes frequently on the topic of Agile development, is the author of the web book “Do It Yourself Agile,” and a pioneer in the area of Multistage Continuous Integration and mixing Scrum and Kanban. Damon’s speaking engagements include: Agile and Beyond 2010-2012, Agile Business Conference, many AgilePaloozas, Agile 2008-2013, Agile DC 2012-2013, Agile Development Practices, numerous Agile community groups, and has trained thousands of people on Agile techniques. He is also a co-founder and past CEO and CTO of AccuRev where he created multiple Award winning products including AccuRev and AccuWorkflow.
